OK, here are a zillion pictures from our trip
to Ireland & Scotland! Rather than putting them into a format similar
to our other picture pages, I decided to spare you the dreadful download
time and just list the pictures in a table as follows, and let you decide
which images you want to view on your own. Feel free to send us any
comments or questions, especially if you have problems viewing any of the
images. Note
that some are a bit out of order, but I'm sure you can figure it all out!
Also, although it never rained on us, it was overcast most of the time,
so some of the images seem kinda dark. I've lightened a few up, but
most came out pretty well.

The first group of images
are all from Dublin, a very clean, friendly, and fun town! This is
the front of a typical apartment building downtown with a small pub on the
bottom floor. |
i3 |
An arch leading to the main
city park (St. Stephen's Green). |
i4 |
Christ Church cathedral,
built between 1170-1220. |
i6 |
The cathedral again. Contains
the heart of St. Laurence O'Toole in a casket on the wall...very weird (picture
of the heart didn't come out, though, so I've included this one I found on the net). |
i5 |
The crypts below the cathedral,
included lots of tombs, relics, and spooky atmosphere. |
i7 |
Painted on the street at
all the crosswalks for stupid Americans like us...saved our lives a few times
actually! |
i8 |
The River Liffey, looking
west. |
i12 |
The River Liffey (and Michelle),
looking east. |
i9 |
In the courtyard of Dublin
Castle, built in the 18th century. |
i10 |
The oldest part of Dublin
Castle, the record tower, built in 1226. |
i11 |
The menu at a pub. Prices
are all in euros. 1 euro almost equals a dollar. |
i14 |
The main pedestrian shopping
area, Grafton Street, with tons of shops, boutiques, and restaurants. |
i15 |
The Oliver St. John Gogarty Pub, where we first had
fish & chips & Guinness, and started our pub crawl. |
i16 |
Roy modeling the dark, thick
Guinness Irish draught...good stuff! |
i17 |
A view of the residential
area. You can barely make out the mountains to the south in the distance
(left side of the image). |
i18 |
St. Ann's church, built in
the 18th century. |
i19 |

Castle! For more information, check out www.clontarfcastle.ie |
i20 |
The reception area. |
i21 |
A seating area. |
i40 |
Looking down into the main
atrium from the 4th floor. |
i22 |
Driving out into the countryside,
specifically Wicklow county and the Wicklow mountains, about an hour south
of Dublin. It's a big bog dotted with pools, streams, and forests.
Much of the movie Braveheart (yes, the movie takes place in Scotland)
was filmed right here. |
i23 |
You can see how green everything
is. When you step on the grass, you sink about 4 inches and water slowly
pools up around your feet. If you walk quickly you stay nice and dry.
It's kinda strange. |
i24 |
Roy striking
a pose over a stream. |
i25 |
2 funny
things about this picture. First, there are sheep ALL over the countryside,
millions of them...white ones, black ones, big ones, little ones, penned
ones, free ones standing in the middle of the road (like these that were
running in front of our car). Second, note the reflection in the windshield
on the right...it's an arrow on the dashboard designed to reflect up and
remind you to drive on the other side of the road! |
i26 |
The lovely
Michelle. |
i27 |
More bog. |
i28 |
Roy striking
yet another pose in front of a moss-covered rock. |
i31 |
Glendalough
("the valley of 2 lakes") is a small town in the Wicklow mountains that has
an ancient monastery, dating back to St. Kevin in the 7th century. There
are bunches of ruined old churches and an ancient graveyard. The white
spots on the wall to the left and on some of the tombstones are all moss,
which dots most everything in the bog. |
i1 |
Another
old building in Glendalough. |
i32 |
This place
is called Lough Tay. As you can see there's a large black lake surrounded
on all sides by steep granite and bog covered hills. We hiked, slipped,
and slid half-way down the hillside to sit on a lone boulder for these shots.
Isn't Michelle lovely? |
i33 |
Here's the
same picture without Michelle. The manicured looking area in the center
is part of one of the Guinness estates (the guys that make the beer). |
i33b |
Same area,
looking to the left of the boulder, instead of to the right. |
i34 |
Ain't we
TOO cute?!? |
i35 |
Powerscourt
waterfall is the highest in Ireland at 425 feet, where the river Dargle dumps
down into a small stream. There are campgrounds below, and there were
TONS of people picnic-ing, playing soccer, and having an all-around good
time. |
i36 |
Looking
straight up the waterfall from the base. |
i37 |
Michelle
striking a pose at the base of the waterfall. |
i38 | Michelle
concentrating intensely as she climbs on the mossy, slippery rocks. |

into a cave near the waterfall. |

An image
taken from far far away of the Stena HSS Voyager, the high-speed ferry we
used to cross from Belfast, Northern Ireland to Stranraer, Scotland. The
ship made the crossing in 1.5 hours at a speed of 40mph carrying cars, trucks,
and loads of people. The passenger deck had TV's, games, restaurants
(including Burger King), and pubs. Like a mini cruise ship! |
s3 |
A view along
the coast as we traveled from Stranraer north, then east to Edinburgh. |
s29 |
Our castle
in Scotland, the Venlaw, located in Peebles, about 40 minutes south of Edinburgh.
You can find more information on their website at www.venlaw.co.uk. |
s28 |
Another
view...not the best pictures of the outside of the castle, sorry! |
s4 |
A view from
our suite looking to the south. |
s5 |
Another
view in the evening to the west. |
s6 |
The castle's
silhouette at night. |
s7 |
Another
view to the east. |
s8 |
The only
interior shot we took...it's hard to make out, but the bed is in a large
square room, and you're looking into a large circular sitting room that's
in the round tower of the castle. The window visible smack dab in the
middle of this image is where we took picture s4 from. |
s9 |
The next
few shots are all taken in Peebles. This is Franco's Italian restaurant
where we had dinner one night. |
s10 |
The main
street. |
s11 |
An old arched
bridge over the river Tweed. |
s12 |
Yet again,
aren't we cute?!? |
s13 |
The Scottish
Convention Center (aka the armadillo) in Glasgow, where the conference was
held. |
s14 |
A street
in Glasgow...the city is a very busy metropolis with great shopping, but
it is very crowded, dark, and noisy. |
s15 |
Glasgow's
city hall. |
s16 |
The next
few pictures are all from Edinburgh castle. Here's a shot from the
top of the castle looking out to the south. |
s17 |
Looking
to the north, at the "new" part of town. Old town and the newer areas
are separated by one long street which you can make out at the edge of the
greenery. |
s18 |
Roy looking
into a cannon...boy is it dark in there...anyone have a light? |
s19 |
The Stone
of Destiny aka the Stone of Scone. This stone's been used for over
a thousand years during coronations in Scotland. It originally (supposedly)
came from the Holy Land, where it was used by Jacob as a pillow during Biblical
times. It ended up in Scotland, was plundered in 1296 by the English,
and stayed in London until 1996 when it was finally returned. It will
be used again during the next British coronation to symbolize the UK's sovereignty
over Scotland. |
s20 |
A hall in
the castle. |
s21 |
Michelle
taking a much safer stance with her cannon. |
s22 |
Another
view to the north. |
s23 |
One of the
many castle buildings, all built at different times, making it quite the
hodge-podge. |
s24 |
Cars parked
in the main castle courtyard. |
s25 |
A view of
the same courtyard, the "royal mile" (the main historic road in town), and
the sea (the Firth of Forth!) beyond. |
s26 |
Another
view of the castle buildings. |
s27 |
And another. |
s30 |
OK, we went
on a ghosts and ghouls tour of the city (check out this link to
see what it was all about), and ended up in the vaults. There are apparently
2 spots where ghosts are regularly seen, felt, or heard. I took pictures
of both spots in case something weird showed up...you can be the judge... |
s31 |
This is
the 2nd picture. |
s33 |
As we've
told most of you, the Queen was visiting Edinburgh on the day we were there,
and she drove right past us!!! Here she is! |
s34 |
And a zoomed
in view. It was quite the coincidence! |
